The Questions Nobody Is Saying Out Loud

Do you believe that what you believe
is really the truth?

Questions people carry deep in their hearts:

✦"I'm worried that my child is losing their faith — or never had certainty of their faith."
✦"I don't know what is true anymore."
✦"I secretly doubt God."
✦"I believe… but I can't explain why."
✦"I'm weary of not having answers to woke, progressive, humanistic, worldly arguments."
✦"I feel left behind — I can't keep up with all the contrasting information and theological debates."
✦"I cannot prove God exists without the Bible."
✦"I do not know how to answer my atheist cousin at Sunday lunch."
✦"I've stopped sharing my faith and beliefs in fear of conflict."

The Charge

The One Thing  Time = Love

Jesus never suggested you put your life on 'Hold' before the important questions get your attention. He actually told a specific parable about this — seed falling among thorns, and he named the thorns precisely: the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, the desire for other things. Not sin. Not rebellion. Just the relentless pressure of keeping everything going. He said those thorns choke the word until it produces nothing. He wasn't describing bad people. He was describing busy people.

✦ ✦ ✦

Martha did nothing wrong. She cooked, hosted, managed and kept the household together while Mary sat at Jesus' feet doing nothing visibly useful. When Martha complained, Jesus didn't tell her the work didn't matter. He said she was worried and troubled about many things while only one thing was really necessary. The problem was never the work. The problem was that the work had become the whole story — and when the whole story is survival, you stop asking whether the story is true.

This is the specific danger of a life built exclusively around managing the immediate. You don't so much make wrong decisions as you make unconsidered ones. You decide what you believe about God, about suffering, about why you're here, about what your children should live for — not through reflection, but through exhaustion. You inherit assumptions, absorb the loudest voices around you, and then defend those positions because you no longer have the mental space to question them.

✦ ✦ ✦

Zacchaeus didn't attend a seminar. He climbed a tree — a small, undignified act of curiosity — just to see. That was all it took. One moment of deliberate attention in the middle of an ordinary day, and his whole life reorganised itself around a different centre. Jesus didn't call him to a theological debate. He said: come down, I'm eating at your house tonight. The question was never about information. It was always about whether you were willing to be interrupted.

CRUX doesn't ask you to leave your life or add another burden to those you already carry. It asks something much smaller and considerably more dangerous — that once a week, for one year, the questions you were too busy to ask finally get a seat at the table.

"For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?"

"CRUX is not another Bible study.
It is a shift in your attention."

How do you answer the toughest questions?
The First Discipline
The Architecture of the Human Soul

Social psychologist Shalom Schwartz identified ten universal motivational drives operating in every person across every culture: the need to think for yourself, to belong, to feel safe, to matter, to experience pleasure, to achieve, to leave something behind. Jesus never met a single person not driven by at least one of them. Neither have you. CRUX maps every intersection between these drives and the life of Christ.

The Second Discipline
The Real Questions

Not the questions we think people are asking. The ones they are actually typing at 2am. "Why does God allow suffering?" "Can I really be forgiven?" "Is Jesus the only way?" "How do I answer the person who says all religions are the same?" Every session is anchored in a documented, real-world question.

The Third Discipline
A Doctoral Framework

CRUX is built on published doctoral research in Christological leadership and discernment. The distinctive contribution: spiritual formation is not about following religious rules or building a self-improvement programme. It is about learning to perceive reality the way Jesus perceived it. The theological term is participatory Christology. The practical result: you stop managing your faith and start living from a different centre.

The Guide
Jan Oosthuizen
Doctor of Narratological Studies  ·  Harvester Church Cederberg  ·  Clanwilliam, Western Cape

I have spent more than thirty years in full-time ministry — from youth centres in Krugersdorp and Brakpan to a small town in the Cederberg mountains of the Western Cape, where I still live, still preach, and still argue with God on a regular basis. I hold a doctorate in Narratological Studies, have written five books, established several Bible courses, and served on enough community committees to know that real change is slow, local, and almost always without applause.

I am not, by my own admission, a man with all the answers.

What I am is someone who has refused to settle for easy ones. Since 1984 I have carried a single conviction: that the most honest engagement with Christianity is also the most intellectually demanding one — and that you should never have to choose between a sharp mind and a living faith. The difficult questions, in my experience, are not obstacles to belief. They are often the door to it.

As a bridge-builder, thought architect, and mindset coach, I have spent decades sitting across the table from people whose faith was either eroding quietly or had already collapsed under the weight of unanswered questions — and helping them discover that the problem was rarely God. It was the version of God they had been handed without ever being asked whether it actually made sense.

Jesus, as I have come to understand him, is not the official guardian of institutions and doctrines — he is the One who meets you in the middle of your ordinary, unfinished life, not to convince you, but to shift your attention. He was known for asking questions rather than giving answers — questions that don't let you go, that break open something in you that you were busy avoiding.

In this course I will not ask you to agree with me. I will ask you to think — carefully, honestly, and without switching off the part of you that knows when something doesn't add up.

CRUX is the course I have been preparing to teach for forty years. Not because I finally have it all figured out — but because I have learned which questions are worth asking, and how to ask them in a way that opens a room instead of closing one.

Welcome to CRUX.  ✦  Jan Oosthuizen

"Can an intelligent person really believe in God?"
